Susan and Louis to Antarctica, January 2009

In January 2009, Susan and Louis went on a cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. We had done a similar trip in 2003, which was wonderful enough to want more of the same. We went with a ship called Akademik Vavilov, operated by Quark Expeditions. If this link still works then you can read their description. Or else, this one, very similar.

You can check our itinerary; you can also use this to navigate these pages.

If you don't care to read the text, there is a slide show of all the pictures.

Books we used for identification and description of wildlife:

  • Couve, E. & C. Vidal (2003) Birds of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego & Antarctic Peninsula, Editorial Fantàstico Sur Birding
  • Shirihai, H. (2008) The complete guide to Antarctic wildlife, second edition, Princeton University Press

All pictures on the site are numbered, which you can see when you hover on a picture with the mouse cursor. In some cases, further information on the picture, like the scientific name of a bird, is given with the number.
